MADRID: Spanish King Felipe VI and his wife, Queen Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, were pelted with mud and eggs by Valencia flood survivors. The incident took place when the two were visiting the flood-affected area in the city of Paiporta in Valencia province today. The crowd expressed anger by calling the king a 'murderer'. There were also protests against Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The three were evacuated from the area by security personnel.
The king and queen tried for about an hour to calm the crowd, but to no avail. In the wake of the protests, King Philip cancelled his scheduled visit to another disaster-hit area. At least 214 people have died in Spain in floods triggered by heavy rains on Tuesday. People alleged that the authorities did not give proper warning and negligence in the rescue operation is what led to the rise in the deaths.
